“Creating Mentorship Pipelines”

As we collectively reflect on how mentorship uniquely differs from supervising and advising relationships, we are hoping the 2016 mid-winter conference Creating Mentorship Pipelines will give NCSPP’s members an opportunity to advance professional psychology, both in education and training, by examining our complex roles as mentors, as well as mentees, across the various facets of our professions.

We are seeking presentation proposals and poster submissions that highlight varying aspects of the mentorship experience. We are particularly interested in presentations that are applicable to the broader NCSPP community, rather than submissions that are idiosyncratic to specific schools/programs.
Proposals for presentations may address, but are not limited to, the following topics within professional psychology:
- Mentorship needs across the professional career lifespan (from graduate student, early career, to late career)
- Balancing the role of evaluator with other roles of mentoring
- How academic institutions/organizations support the development of mentorship competency
- Innovative mentorship programs
- Issues related to mentorship of underrepresented groups (eg. LGBTQ, racial/ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, second career, non-traditional students) within the field of psychology
- Mentorship in specific areas (i.e., publication, teaching, advocacy, etc.)
Types of presentation submissions
- Interactive Sessions: In a 60-minute session, a facilitator (lead author) introduces the topic and sets up a context for subsequent discussions and interactions among participants.
- Symposia: In a 60 to 75-minute symposium, three or four presentations are given around a common theme. An expert discussant may provide feedback. A symposium proposal submission must include one program summary that integrates the multiple presentations within the session. It must also clearly indicate the titles and contents of each presentation within the symposium. No individual paper proposals for symposium presentations are accepted.
Proposals for posters should address the following:
- We are interested in poster submissions that reflect collaborative work between faculty or supervisor mentors and student mentees. We are particularly interested in more of a narrative quality here, or posters that reflect the qualitative aspects of faculty/supervisor mentoring relationships with students. We envision that this could be a method for helping students obtain co-authorship on a poster. Students are not eligible to attend the conference (with the exception of chosen student delegates). Faculty/mentors should be present during the poster session.
Guidelines for All Abstracts
- Lead author name, degree, and program affiliation
- Contact information for the lead author (email and phone number)
- Names, degrees, and program affiliations of additional authors
- Title of proposal (max. 30 words) – for Symposia, each title submitted (max. 30 words)
- Interactive Session Abstracts (max. 300 words)
- Symposia Abstracts (max. 500 words)
- Poster Abstracts (max. 150 words)
- Clear learning objectives
Proposal Rating Criteria
Proposals will be rated based on the following criteria:
- Choice of Topic
- Membership Appeal
- Generalizability of presentation content to all member programs
- Theoretical Framework
- Methodology/Mode of Inquiry
- Innovation and Creativity
- Contribution to the Field
- Relationship to Conference Theme
All proposals will be reviewed by the NCSPP Mid-Winter Conference Planning Committee:
- Submitters will be notified by email upon receipt of their proposal.
- Submitters may be asked to consider altering the format of their submission to best accommodate conference program scheduling
- Submission outcomes will be sent via email by October 26, 2015.
- For submissions that are designated by the planning committee as continuing education (CE) courses, individual authors will be contacted to provide additional information.
